weave poles..... a question.....

Post  nik6to7 on Tue Nov 18, 2008 5:28 pm

1. How can i speed up my dogs weaves, he is still learning but slower then i would like.
2. How can i keep his head low, he has a toy placed out but still doesnt keep his head low, i have helpers at hand if your idea requires 2 people!
3. Would weaving on uneven ground make him slower then what she would go on even ground? This ground is lumpy (hard to get weaves to stand) is dry, dirt (hard) with some odd bits of thick grass?

Hello NIC can you please change your user name to your full name for us?
Many Thanks
ref your problem with the weaves:
What method did you train on?
If you are using channels or V weaves (or did to train your weaves) I would certainly use the toy at the end as a marker/target for the dog to go to...this may lower the head for you too but essentially the dog must be balanced going through the weaves so the dogs head carriage cannot be forced in my view the dog needs to find its own balance in the weaves.
ref speed, if you used either of the methods above. go back to basics and open your channel/v and have some fun. Throw a toy on exit to reward too.

The ground will of course not help you so yes find yourself a flat piece of ground apart from anything else, your dog will find it difficult to remain balanced on lumpy ground and this will effect your speed / motivation and accuracy too and also could result in injury if your dog gets its toe/foot caught while weaving.

hth
and dont forget to change your user name for us
